WELCOME MESSAGE

Professor Koffi Herve Yangni-Angate, MD, FWACS, FICS, FISS

Immediate Past-President, WACS and Current President, PAAS

Dear Distinguished Participants,

You are All welcome to our common international conference on « Global Surgery: implementation for Africa » organized by the « Pan African Association of Surgeons(PAAS) » in association with the « African Union Commission (AUC) ».  From the perspective of development and socio-economic growth in line with the African Union(AU) Agenda 2063 and the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024 ( STISA 2024) adopted by different African countries, PAAS aims to contribute to the development of health systems in Africa. As noted in STISA 2024 document : « African countries will not develop economically and socially without substantial improvement in health care delivery ».

Following the declaration of the World Health Assembly (WHA) of the United Nations in May 2015, Surgery and Anesthesia have been recognized as essential components of primary health care. This resolution is useful because it is shown that 5 billion people or 70% of the world population has no access to surgical care and anesthesia in developing countries. In addition, every year, millions of Africans die of preventable and treatable diseases because of several reasons such as limited access to health services and technologies; poor human resources and extreme poverty etc…. These findings prove to be a hindrance to any economic, social countries with low or modest incomes. Therefore, PAAS initative joins AU vision by 2063: “A peaceful and prosperous Africa without poverty based on inclusive growth and sustainable development”. In an another word, « Global Surgery Implementation for Africa » responds fully to the vision of AU Agenda 2063 and STISA 2024.

At this Conference, PAAS will have the privilege to gather during 3 days, international experts and decision-makers from around the world to discuss on the most appropriate agenda for global surgery to be implemented for Africa.

We hope that a realistic, feasible and achievable actions-plan will emerge from this conference for a better quality of surgical and anesthesia care delivery for All in Africa and particularly a better access to surgical treatment for people living in rural and poorest areas in Africa.

With Kind Regards
